Domestic Violence and Firearm Restrictions
A person subject to a domestic violence protective order may not own, possess, purchase, receive or attempt to purchase or receive a firearm while the protective order is in effect. After a judge issues a protective order, the judge must order the person to relinquish firearms in his or her possession or subject to his or her possession or control within twenty four hours of being served with the protective order. The person served with the protective order may either surrender the firearm to law enforcement locally or sell the firearm to a licensed gun dealer. Then he or she must file with the court a receipt indicating sale or surrender of the firearm within 48 hours after receiving the order.
