What are Infractions
Criminal infractions differ from misdemeanors and felonies. Infractions are not punishable by jail or prison. A person may not be jailed or imprisoned to satisfy an outstanding fine in connection with an infraction sentence. A person charged with an infraction, unlike misdemeanors and felonies, is not entitled to a jury trial. And unlike misdemeanors and felonies, a person is generally not entitled to appointed counsel. However, in most instances, the maximum fine for an infraction is $250. And in most instances, conviction of an infraction is not grounds to suspend a business or professional license. Nor is a criminal infraction grounds to revoke a client's probation or parole status.
