Booking, Fingerprints, Searches and DNA
In 2008 the Santa Cruz Sheriffs Office implemented a new fingerprint picture system called Automated Fingerprint Identification System. It is also known as AFIS. This system of identification used for persons arrested for misdemeanors and felonies and booked into the Main Jail in Santa Cruz County includes photographs, palm print and fingerprints of the person arrested. The AFIS system provides the Sheriff's Office positive identification of a person throughout the booking intake process and interfaces with the State of California mug shot system. Those arrested for a drug crime or suspected of hiding drugs or weapons may require body inspection. In November of 2004, the Santa Cruz Sheriff's Office implemented a procedure requiring all persons convicted of a felony including sex crimes to submit a DNA sample. A cheek swab sample from the offender is sent to the Department of Justice for processing and inclusion in the State of California's database.
