The Booking Process at the Main Jail in Santa Cruz County
At commencement of the booking process for a misdemeanor such as a DUI or Domestic Violence or a felony such as Vehicular Manslaughter or Sex
Crimes at the Santa Cruz County Main Jail all personal property is taken from the arrested person. The items are labeled and stored either in the Santa Cruz Main Jail's property room or a valuables locker. When the person is released from custody, the items are returned. The person's prints are run through a touch fingerprint system which has a record of over 300,000 people arrested in Santa Cruz County. The prints are checked with the State Department of Justice. Individuals who are unable to post bail or who are not eligible for release are housed in a pre-classification unit. Their picture is taken and if they have tattoos the tattoos are photographed. Persons can shower and must change into jail-issue clothes. Money in the possession of the person is posted as a credit to a personal jail account. Each person is issued a kit which includes clothing, bedding, utensils and hygiene items. Prior to admittance, a nurse performs a medical review of each inmate.
