Sheriff's work program, also known as work release or alternative work program, persons sentenced for a crime serve their sentence by participating in public service work projects such as removing litter from the highway or removing graffiti. In a work furlough program persons sentenced for crimes are released during the day to go to work and spend nights in jail. With the electronic monitoring program also known as EMP, persons sentenced are permitted to serve their sentence at home and are monitored at home through GPS or electronic monitoring. Persons must have a telephone line. In a weekender program, persons are permitted to serve their sentence over a weekend or weekdays depending on the persons' schedule. Community work service permits sentenced persons to earn credits for work in the community that may benefit nonprofit organizations.
