Criminal Conviction and Professional Licenses
A criminal arrest or conviction may have an effect on a person's business or professional license. In the State of California there are scores of different state agencies that license professions and businesses from attorneys, accountants, chiropractors, dentists, dietitians, social workers, guide dog trainers, funeral directors, real estate brokers and agents, teachers, nursing home administrators, insurance agents, plumbers, cosmetologists and nurses. An attorney for a person charged with a crime may structure plea bargains and/or convictions in misdemeanor or felony cases taking into consideration the effect of the plea bargain or conviction on the client's license. In addition to potential licensing consequences of a conviction, clients holding business or professional licenses may be required to report convictions and in some instances arrests as well.
