Drug Offense Cases and Deferred Entry of Judgment
A person may be eligible for what is called deferred entry of judgment in a drug offense case. The person charged with the drug crime must plead guilty to the crime charged and waive time for entry of judgment by the court. Judgment on the plea of guilty is then put over or deferred until the person has successfully completed the drug program. Once the person successfully completes the drug program, criminal proceedings are dismissed. If however the person violates the terms imposed by the court, the person may be terminated from the drug program. Also if the person fails to successfully complete the drug program, the person is sentenced by the judge.
