Death Penalty In California
United States District Judge Jeremy Fogel toured San Quentin State Prison this past week to see whether the new execution chamber meets constitutional standards. According to a San Jose Mercury News editorial California has 718 prisoners on death row. According to the same editorial, the cost of housing a death row inmate is $90,000 a year more than for prisoners serving life without parole and that prison officials estimate the extra cost at $600 million in the past decade.
