Senior Ombudsman Program
The Senior Ombudsman Program consists of five staff across the state available to assist senior drivers. The DMV Senior Ombudsman are located at the San Francisco/Oakland office at 510- 563- 8998, the Sacramento/ Northern California office at 916- 657- 6464, the Orange/San Bernadino/ San Diego office at 949- 553-3573 and the Los Angeles/ Oxnard office at 310- 412-6103. Up to 6,000 people contact Senior DMV Ombudsmans a year. Drivers are required to take a written and an eye test when their license is up for renewal for the first time after the driver turns 70 years old. A driving test may be required if the results of the exams raise a concern by the DMV or if a medical doctor believes a driving test is necessary. Drivers may have their licenses restricted to driving only during the day or only on city streets and not on freeways.
