Texting While Driving
California has adopted legislation which bans texting while driving a vehicle. The legislation took effect January 1, 2009. It prohibits a person from driving a motor vehicle while using a electronic wireless communication device to write, send or read a text based communication. The penalties imposed for a violation of the law are fines of twenty dollars for a first offense and fifty dollars for each subsequent offense. The law does not give driving violation points on a motorists driving record. The law exempts emergency personnel. The law also does not apply to persons dialing a phone number for purposes of making a phone call.
