Expedited Jury Trials Act 2011
The Expedited Jury Trials Act took effect January 2011. The Expedited Jury Trials Act changes the nature of civil disputes in California by reducing the cost of a simple jury trial by as much as 80 percent. The Expedited Jury Trails Act is modeled after a similar quick trial plan offered in New York and South Carolina. Pursuant to the Act, expedited jury trials will be heard on a date certain before a judge and jury of eight persons. Each side will be limited to three peremptory challenges and will have to present their case and argument in three hours with the goal of concluding the civil trial in one day. The Act is desgned to save the judiciary significant amounts of money and allows people to get their cases to trial and have their day in court. Contact Christine McGuire.
