By law, persons convicted of certain sex crimes are required to register as a sex offender with a local law enforcement agency. Prior to their release from prison, jail, a mental hospital or on probation, sex offenders are notified of their duty to register. A copy of the notification form is forwarded to the Department of Justice When a sex offender is released into the community, the law enforcement agency forwards the registration information to the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice's Sex Offender Tracking Program has been responsible for keeping track of registered sex offenders in California since registration commenced in 1947.
