Police in Santa Cruz have launched a cell phone application that compiles crime maps, crime news and crime alerts and lets its users listen to the police radio online. The application combines the police's Nixie alerts which is an online system that warns residents of closed roads, missing persons, police activity and disasters with the ability to upload crime information to the police. The application is free and is available as an IPhone application on ITunes and its features are available for other smartphones as a mobile website. The app also includes photos and videos of recent police activity and a live scanner that police use to communicate among themselves and with emergency dispatchers. This is the first time the Santa Cruz police frequency has been available online.
