Options of Party Calling Witness When Privilege Against Self Incrimination Permitted

When a claim of privilege based on self incrimination is permitted and the Government is the party calling the witness the Government  may elect to grant explicit immunity to the witness.  Once immunity has been granted in a felony case, the claim of privilege is disallowed and the witness must testify.  When immunity is granted by the Government  in a misdemeanor case a written agreement is required and contempt is not available if the witness refuses to testify.
