Questioning of Passenger
A lawful road stop stop by law enforcement begins when a vehicle is pulled over for investigation of a traffic violation. A temporary seizure of a driver of the vehicle and its passengers continues and remains reasonable for the duration of the stop. The stop ends when the police have no further need to control the scene and inform the driver and the passengers that they are free to leave. A law enforcement's inquiries into matters unrelated to the stop do not covert the stop or encounter into something other than a lawful seizure provided the inquiries by law enforcement do not extend measurably the duration of the stop the reasoning being a traffic stop of a car communicates to a reasonable passenger in the vehicle that he or she is not free to terminate the encounter with police and move about at will.
