Christine McGuire, Criminal Defense Lawyer
Christine McGuire is a former prosecutor of 30 years. She has been in private
practice as a defense attorney for ten years. She graduated from Southwestern
Law School receiving her Juris Doctor degree in 1977. Christine was admitted
to the State Bar of California that same year. After a short time in private
practice in Orange County, Christine volunteered with VISTA-Volunteers
in Service to America. As staff attorney for legal services, Christine
represented clients in Nevada's criminal, civil and tribal courts.
Christine began her work as a prosecutor in Northern California in 1980.
She litigated misdemeanors and felonies including the case of People v
Hooker, a sexual enslavement case. In 1986 Christine relocated to the
Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office where she handled almost
every kind of criminal case including felonies, misdemeanors, DUI's,
domestic violence, sexual assault and homicides. In 2005 Christine received
a LL.M - Master of Laws from Santa Clara University School of Law. Over
the past ten years Christine has represented clients charged in adult
courts on the Central Coast and in the Bay area. She has represented clients
charged with homicide charges including murder and manslaughter as well
as Serious and Violent crimes as well as other violations of the Penal
Code, Health and Safety Code and Vehicle Code. She has represented clients
accused of Sexual Misconduct in adult court, juvenile court and in Title
IX proceedings. She represents professionals accused of crimes in criminal
courts in the Bay area.
Christine is one of the few Bay area private attorneys specializing in
Juvenile Delinquency defense law. Christine is committed to advocating
for children and youth. She has represented children and youth when contacted
by the police or probation officers. She has settled cases at Intake,
resolved cases with Informal Supervision, handled Detention Hearings,
Pretrial Hearings, Jurisdictional Hearings, Dispositional Hearings and
litigated Transfer Hearings. She has negotiated Release at the Scene,
Station House and Probation Release and Police Citation to Appear in Court.
She has negotiated Informal Supervision, Home Supervision and Wardship
with Probation at Home at Dispositional Hearings in Juvenile Court.
Christine has been active in the legal community. She is a member of the
State Bar of California, former member of the Board of Directors of the
Santa Cruz County Bar Association. Christine served as Bench/Bar Liaison
for the Santa Cruz County Bar Association. Christine served on the Board
of Directors of Women Lawyers of Santa Cruz County, served as Committee
Member on the State Bar Committee Women in the Law and served on the governing
board of California Women Lawyers. She was Co-Chair of CWL's 13th
Annual Northern California Judicial Reception. Christine co-founded and
served as Chair of the Santa Cruz County Domestic Violence Commission
and Santa Cruz County Child Death Review Team. She also co-founded and
served as Co-Chair of the Santa Cruz County Domestic Violence Review Team.
